Get started. Five steps to follow in order, each one detailed in its guide.

Check off each step once it’s done: your progress is kept in this browser
  1. Install Aureole

Download Aureole, install it, then follow its welcome screens on first launch.

    1. Open the DMG file you downloaded.
    2. Drag the Aureole icon onto the Applications folder.
    3. Launch Aureole: its welcome screens guide you step by step.
  2. Allow Aureole to act

macOS asks for your consent, one permission at a time.

    1. “Accessibility”: it lets Aureole read your selection. It’s the only one you need.
    2. For Aureole to drive an app such as Mail, Notes or Safari, macOS asks for your consent, once per app.
    3. The other permissions are requested when a feature needs them.
The Settings window, Permissions tab: Accessibility, Screen Recording, System Events and Microphone “Granted”, Location “Allow…”, Full Disk Access in red.
  3. Add an API key

One key per AI provider, kept in your Mac’s Keychain.

    1. Create a key on your provider’s keys page, for example platform.openai.com/api-keys for OpenAI or platform.claude.com/settings/keys for Claude. The guide gives the addresses for all ten providers.
    2. Paste it in Settings›Providers
    3. Aureole checks right away that the connection works.
The Settings window, Providers tab, on OpenAI: the API key pasted in, and the connection status, OK three times: “Connection to OpenAI operational”.
  4. Discover the Aureole Bar

What it shows, before you use it.

    1. It opens over your app in its compact form: a field, with the useful keys underneath.
    2. To the left of the field, the pill shows what the bar spotted in your app, such as selected text.
    3. The ↓ key expands it: actions, agents, apps.
The compact Aureole Bar: the dotted “TextEdit +” pill, the field “Search for an action, an agent, or ask a question…”, the microphone; at the bottom, “Expand” and “Search”.
  5. Your first ⌥Space

Run an action or ask a question from any app.

    1. Press ⌥Space from any app, with or without a selection.
    2. The bar spots what you’re looking at: selected text, files in the Finder, a web page, an email or a window.
    3. Run an action on that content, or ask a question. For the question to take it into account, click the pill first; otherwise, it goes on its own.
The Aureole Bar shown on top of the TextEdit window, over the selected note: left of the field, the dotted “TextEdit +” pill.

Next: add an MCP server to plug in one more tool.

Troubleshoot. Choose what isn’t working: you’ll find out why, and what to do.

Act in your apps

Another app is probably already using this shortcut.

A launcher, a window manager or another assistant may be using ⌥Space before Aureole.

  1. Free the shortcut in the app that uses it, if you know which one.
  2. Or choose another shortcut for Aureole: Settings›General, Shortcuts section, “Aureole Bar” row.

Still stuck? In Aureole, open Settings›About and click “Contact Support”: an email opens, already filled in with your Aureole and macOS versions, which helps us understand the problem. You can also write to us from the website.
